Friend of mine in Midland, Tx told me this story a couple years ago. He was short handed and way behind on well location construction. So he put a ad in the paper for a dozer operator. Later that day, a long haired tattooed character shows up riding a chopped up Harley. Looked rough as a cob but polite. Told my friend he had lots of experience on a dozer and loader. Being desparate for operators, my friend took the guy to the back of the yard and told him to get on a D-6 and show what he could do, get a blade full of dirt and drift it for a 100 yards or so. First thing the guy does is check oil in the engine and other fluids, does a walk-around checking out the dozer. Then starts it and let it run for a minute or so. Then takes off and puts the blade down and commences to push dirt, digging holes and making washboards like amateur. Backs up and starts a second pass. Better that time, but still leaving the dirt wavy and rough. Backs up for a third pass. This time, smooth as glass, almost blue top quality. The guy finishes, shuts off the dozer and walks over to my friend. He asked the guy "What's the deal? First two passes looked like krap. Last one is almost perfect." The long haired guy looked him right in the eye and said "First pass is $15.00 a hour. Second pass was $20.00 an hour. Last pass was $25.00 an hour. Which one do you want?" My friend hired him on the spot...for $25.00 an hour. That was 20something years ago. The guy still works there and still the best dozer hand my friend has.
