Doug, Thanks for the insight. I will pay close attention to the amp meter at start-up. If in fact the meter goes negative as it does when its running - do you think the problem is in the regulator or the generator?? Bob : : Here's one. Got the TO 35 I am rebuilding started today for the first time in 15 years. New battery, etc. Notice that the amp meter is reading - negative. Faster I run the engine more negative it goes. Any ideas why. Did something get reversed? Is the generator not working? Can you help?? : : Thanks : Try this: Watch the amp meter closely when you first turn the key to ignition, before operating the starter. If it moves to the positive side a little (3-4 amps) you can be pretty sure, with what else you've described, that it's just the wiring to the amp meter. Switch the wires on the back of the meter and be happy. You can be sure that the ignition has a slight NEGATIVE current draw, so a POSITIVE reading shows the reversal to be at the meter. : Since your guage is probably reading in reverse, an increasingly negative charge indicates that the generator and regulator are probably working correctly.
