The engine life is based on one tablespoon??? This from the same Mfg's engineers that, once upon a time, recommened sprinkling just about that much BonAmi cleaner into the air stream to seat stubborn rings on their older engines. Don't believe it, find one of the older manuals and take a look, they actually had a part number for it to go along with the recommendation.
Beyond that, your right, poor quality filters will shorten engine life just as much as improper lubrication.
