From the early 60's till 1979 when we stopped growing flu cured tobacco we used moth balls in the oil burners we had in log barns before we put the first curing in every summer. I'd open the oil carb. for each burner and light each burner. Then throw in six moth balls in the fire for each burner. It cleaned all the soot out of those burners. Once they started burning could walk outside and see the soot come out the stack and fall to the ground. It also cleaned out the flu pipes. We bought the oil from a ESSO supplier and he also sold burners too. He told us to do this each year and we wouldn't have to take the flu pipes down and clean them and it also cleaned out the tiny holes where the air came in to the burner. Sure saved us a lot of time cleaning those burner systems. Never put any in a fuel tank but it sure did the job on burner chambers and pipes.
