I asked on the Massey board, but figured I'd try over here too-
What's all needed to put a 1000 PTO stub on a 285? I found a housing on craigslist for $25, but it doesn't have the shaft that I know of. Dad was always under the impression that all you needed was the shaft, but after looking at the AGCO parts books online, it does give different part #'s for the housings and shafts, but the rest is all the same.
It's nothing we NEED, but it's always been something we wanted if we could find it. The only thing on our farm that is 1000 RPM right now is our chopper, which we power with our Oliver 1855 that puts out 105 HP on the pto. Only reason I would try it on that is to try opening the fields with it as our 1855 doesn't fit between the rows so it always stamps down atleast 1 row. The 285 would atleast go between them.
I know that the shaft can be hard to find, and expensive when it is found. I found an aftermarket shaft on Ebay for a hair over $200 which actually doesn't seem too bad... No mention of the housing on there either though...

If it would just start when I turn the key, then I would use it more often. In addition to a bad case of old age, most of the tractor's original electrical system was simply too unreliable to keep. The main focus of this page is to show how I upgr
