: : I am interest in purchasing a tractor and have found a candidate at a nearby dealer. It is a used one, so I expect I might be able to haggle on the price a bit. It is a L-2900 Kubota w/frontloader. Regarding "haggling", since we are midway through June, would it be reasonable to point out that "most" people that are going to purchase a tractor probably have by now? That being the case, this one could be on the lot for either one day, or several more months. : : I know that he can laugh me off, but I am wondering if there is merit in the logic that most "planned" purchases would have been done by now since we are in the growing season. : : Any comments are appreciated. : I don't think any argument you use is going carry any weight or mean anything to the salesperson. All they care about is selling the widget. If you don't want to pay that price, tell him. Make him a ridiculous offer and he will laugh at you. It's all part of the game. Then ask him, how much can you knock off. He'll lie and say that's the best I can do. Then you will say well I can't do that. Such and such is the best I can do. Then he'll say wait a minute and he'll go into some office for a little bit and come back out and say here's what I can do. It's probably another lie but it will be about the best your going to get out of him. : I know this game because I used to do it. : I'll give you an example. When we had a good day selling, we would tell a potential buyer, "We've had a good day so we can afford to take a loss on this one." Then on the flip side we would say, "We've had a bad day and we need to sell some cars, so we'll take a loss just to move some units." Then in both cases, "The boss is out of town and he'll probably shoot me when he gets back, but whad'ya sa?" Curiosity - Why the "Former car salesman", conscience get ya?
