I used to work for a Jeep and Renault dealership before it went bankrupt- things got interesting in early 1970s after the OPEC crunch and currency adjustement. AMC had Jeep then and Renault bought into AMC for the Jeep line and the dealership network to sell Renaults- they sold Jeep to Chrysler and Mercedes bought Chrysler for the Jeep brand and the dealership network in US about the same as Renault had done with now folded AMC. Fiat has a fair market share in Europe but lacks american dealerships- Chrysler becomes available through bankruptcy and Fiat can get it cheap, Jeep customer base is a bonus, the Chrysler trucks fair potential for parts sales a few years- and Fiat has owned Moog for years as Al Gore found out. Ford still making things without government bailouts, bankruptcy- sort of the john Deere of US auto industry. Renault sort of gave up on US market- still around in europe and there are some worse cars made- Yugo"s still on streets someplaces with Fiat parts and a few spares from Serbia- the Country of Yugoslavia folded before warrantee ran out on last cars sold by the government owned factory- lesson here, government backed promise may not be kept if gornement folds. .
