As I have posted before, and another reply here also states, CAT used to recommend it for engines where a new set of rings didn't seat. In fact they even had a part number for it in some of the older service manuals. That said I had a Perkins some years back that I rebuilt for a customer. It's on a MF tractor but rarely gets used for anything but a power unit to run a secondary hydraulic system for a conveyor that's attached to it. As a result the engine rarely gets run much above an idle, unless they are transporting it, and is under nearly no load. To make matters worse, in this instance, it was also the middle of winter so even getting it to operating temp was a challenge. As a result I got a call about a week after putting the engine back in that it was leaking oil out the exhaust. I wound up completely blocking the airflow through the radiator to get it up to temp, and then slowly fed about 2 tbsps of BonAmi into the intake with it running at full throttle. I let it run all out from that point on and within about 30 minutes the oil in the exhaust had dried up/burnt off. That's been around 6 years ago and the machine has been run ALOT since then with no further problems.
Wether it will work on an older engine with glazed walls I couldn't say, but on a new one with problems seating the rings all I know is it worked for me. Good luck.
