We really do not need the extra work. We do not do any other custom work anymore. Between my sons, myself and my brother we will have close to 3000 acres to plant and harvest. This is split between six people so it not that much when you look at it that way. My brother owns his own combine. The boys bought one last fall so I just do my own ground with the JD 6620 side hill now. The planters do plant all of the ground though.
The land owner is an old friend. His ground really is not the type to be farmed with real large equipment. It would kill him to have his waterways and such torn out. That is what he will get if he rents to most of the cash renters around here.
When I was a kid that farm had gullies that where ten feet deep in places. In the 1970s they put in terraces, cosy damns and grass water ways. It would not take a few years of full farming for it to be back with gullies.
I have advised him to keep involved himself so he can control the fields. He is a tight wad and just sees the high cash rents as pure profit without any risk. He really should just sell now while the prices are high. None of his family wants anything to do with farming. His house and twenty acres are on one side of the country road so he should just sell the rest off.
