Oh so only our friends can have nukes.
So what gives us that right to decide if a country is worthy of haveing nukes. What if russia had said no nukes for united states because you are not our friend.
This country was built on freedom of religion but we fight many wars because of religion. We have many enemies because we force our beliefs on others; where as if we minded our own business we would most likely be better off.
My response was not my personal beliefs, but how I see DC and the UN looking at the situation, and how it seems to play out in the real world. As a nation, we let our "friends" get away with murder, yet we don't like our enemies getting away with jaywalking. Others (much of Africa south of the top tier of countries) we ignore totally, even with the horror stories playing out over there because there is nothing in it for us as a country to get into a fight that will gain us nothing monetarily, resource-wise, and our efforts there wouldn't even score us some brownie points on the world stage.
I personally don't think anyone should have nukes, but that ain't happening. Bigger and badder weapons are probably right around the corner, anyway. I do feel that if we'd just stay away from parts of the world that dislike us or our ideals, we'd be better off. Problem is we've developed some "friends" in those areas and they are threatened by those who would also do us harm. You do have to stick up for your "friends" even if they wouldn't have the ability to return the favor if the shoe was on the other foot.
When these sanctioned countries feel their way of life or ideals threatened or their grip loosening on the throats of their own people they either stir up enough propaganda to unite their people against the world and/or make plans to fight those who's ideals conflict with their own. A nuke, be it long-range or not, would be a great equalizer for these countries. They could even use it on their own soil, blame us or our "friends", and their people would still believe them. Having a nuke gets them a world audience and instills more national pride in their people.
I feel these sanctions are a dog and pony show. Those countries need very little of what the rest of the world has to offer on so many levels. Sanctions will accomplish just about nothing, other than eventually leading to war. It does legitimize the eventual war in the UN's eyes because they can say "hey, we tried". The sanctions only show who's on who's side that day. The sanctioned countries still have "friends", including some that sided with the US in voting for those sanctions. Saying one thing and following through doesn't always happen. Tomorrow's a new day, and at times deals and new "friends" are made overnight.
I'd say we're no longer the 10,000 lb. gorilla in the room at the UN. More like the 6,500 lb. gorilla, and dieting heavily. When we pound our chest, people still pay attention, but it's getting to be lesser so each day. One good move and we could be the 10,000 lb. groilla again. One bad move and we could be the old gorilla that people once remembered fondly, but is now bleeding out in a dark corner. The world sees our country being a financial mess and burocratic joke, and after several military campaigns since WWII with less than stellar results, someone is bound to try and push our buttons and test our might, and probably soon.
The reason I put "friends" in quotes is that sometimes yesterday's enemy is today's friend and maybe tomorrow's enemy, or vice-versa. Who knows? Some are only our friends because we're the top dog or popular kid in class, or it's the fad of the moment, or they get something in return for being our friends. Some are simply afraid of crossing us, even if they don't completely agree with us.
Words cannot describe the thoughts and thanks I have about being born in and living in a free country or my thoughts on those who fought, gave blood, sweat, tears, body parts, sanity and/or paid the ultimate price for those freedoms we enjoy every day. I wish everyone shared these rights, but I'm a realist. It saddens me that it's probably never going to be universal worldwide. Those freedoms have since it's begining made the USA the greatest nation in the world. Being free allows my thoughts to be expressed above, allows this site to exist and not be censored by the government, and also allows this site to delete what they see fit, as it is their's. They own it. I certainly hope this thread doesn't go poof. There are alot of ideas and thoughts here. All of our free thinking may not accomplish anything, but lack of free thought will surely be the end of us all.
Many of us detest the whole drone thing. Our theory of law in this country has always been that locking up every criminal is ideal, but not at the expense of locking up one innocent (wo)man. We have never been a country where evidence could be obtained by any means necessary. How many more freedoms are the honest, innocent, law-abiding Americans going to surrender for the potential to perhaps catch a single criminal that wouldn't be caught with other available methods? Want to use a drone for surveilance of US citizens on US soil? Make their use something a warrant is needed for. Want to use an armed drone on US citizens on US soil, even with a warrant? That's the end of America.

Today's Featured Article - Restoration Story: Fordson Major - by Anthony West. George bought his Fordson Major from a an implement sale about 18 years ago for £200.00 (UK). There is no known history regarding its origins or what service it had done, but the following work was undertaken alone to bring it up to show standard. From the engine number, it was found that this Major was produced late 1946. It was almost complete but had various parts that would definitely need replacing.
