Doubt it is an electrical issue. You can unhook all the connectors to the transmission and you should still have a forward and reverse engagement.
Have him start the truck and cancel OD with the switch on the end of the shift lever. If it hops into gear then the OD roller clutch is blown. Which means it has to come apart.
That neutral safety switch on the drivers side that others have mentioned can cause some wierd stuff. A scan tool would be a real help. Not so much for the codes as for the data. That switch can do some wacky things and not throw a code. BW
