Mark, My daughters first car was a 90 Dodge spirit with a 3.0 L mitsubishi that dropped exhaust valve guides and sucked the oil out the exhaust. Engine never burned the oil, but it made a heck of a smoke screen.
At that time, quacker state had an ad showing a car with synthetic oil in it. They drained the oil and ran the car around the indy track for 500 miles with no oil.
My daughter put her car to the test many times before I fixed the engine. So, I became a fan of synthetic. My jubilee has dry starts, I don't worry about it, the engine doesn't make a noise, and to date, the engine doesn't burn a drop of oil. Something must be working.
I was told many years ago by a mechanic not to use synthetic when breaking in a new engine. He said slick oil will prevent rings from seating like they should. George
