The pictures at the time showed a "assault rifle/assualt weapon" found in TRUNK of car- this led to confusion of weapons used- the line at the times was pistols only used to shoot since the "assualt rifle" was in trunk of car. Then came coroner saying bullet wounds were almost all .223 and casings found were mostly 5.56 Nato/.223. So back to initial pictures of the officers recovering "Assualt Rifle" and it was noted to be a Kalasnikov instead of m16 pattern- then was noted to be a shotgun on police inventory forms. Back to pictures and some firearms dealers and gunsmith instead of media flacks were asked what is it? Response was likely a Kalashnikov derived shotgun popular with some people now sold under Baikal and Saiga names- it has 5 round, 10 round, 20 round detachable box magazine similar to the slightly curved Kalashnikov rifle pattern, same basic rotary bolt, gas operated action and is noted for reliability and ease of maintenance, moderate price- all good points of proven Kalashnikov design. Drum magazines of RPK pattern also noted popular in .410 caliber for a couple markets as home defense, security use, utility hunting. Implication is that a 12 bore magazine might also be made- now it seems that the 12 gauge drum is made and in demand.
