Had an old guy that lived close to us when we lived in Charlotte when I was growing up that got bit by a cotton mouth. The snake had been caught in a trap he had set down by my cousins pond. Story was he drove himself to the hospital and told them he had been bit by a cotton mouth but they wouldn't give him an antivenom shot for one because they said there were none in this part of the state. So, he walked out, drove back, killed the snake, and took it back to the hospital with him. Thankfully, for him, he was one of those guys that was never 'normal' until he had a beer or twelve, so his blood alcohol level stayed high all the time. When he showed back up with the moccasin to show him he got his shot, and was told he was lucky to be alive. Had he not had so much alcohol in his system to 'deaden' the venom, they said he wouldn't have faired quite so well. True story or not I can't say for sure, but it's one that I heard all my life. I can say with 100% certainty though that knowing the man I honestly can't say I doubt it one bit.
