JD 2020 Alternator/charging Sys

I believe its a '65 model, I've got the serial number tag somewhere in here, its at a friends farm, I don't own it, but have done minor work on it over the years.

Here's the problem and though I take care of my equipment as I prefer, theres something to be desired about what they do, (trying to put it nicely), it really don't matter to me, however;

The tractor is being run off battery power, alternator tested bad some time back, they put it back on. Whenever we use this tractor, its a pain in the @ss.

I remember at some point when I initially told them, the alternator that was on this tractor, a motorola, was not charging, at some time it was replaced, my meter said it was charging, but I believe the battery if left connected, went dead and its been left like this for several years and at some point that alternator went bad. I have a load test meter, probably one of the simplest but most useful tool at times.

So the question is, relatively simple, I believe this to be a 3 wire alternator, (I should remember because I replaced all the wiring LOL) and I am not sure if theres an external or internal voltage regulator, say like a typical GM alternator.

I'd like to help rid this tractor of this problem, what is the or a correct alternator for this tractor, model number, type, amperage etc. what do they typically go for ? No trouble to swap that out, next is the battery draw down, I always forget how to use the darned test light to check for current when the key is off, its simple I know, just forget. I assume that would find whats drawing current, or what am I missing that could be suspect of drawing power when the key is off ?

Its just kind of a matter of my long time friends, 3 brothers, either confused or what about this and keep fooling with batteries, running off the battery, and all the rest, we were towing saw logs yesterday, this is such a simple problem to repair, I'd just like to do it myself to be honest and end this, its kind of ridiculous, often times a pain in the @ss and the source of minor bickering, which I hate being involved in, my response is always fix the darned thing LOL !!!

I had this problem in my '64 F600, alternator, and external voltage regulator, some wiring that was it, end of the problem, this can't be much different.

Today's Featured Article - Restoration Story: Fordson Major - by Anthony West. George bought his Fordson Major from a an implement sale about 18 years ago for £200.00 (UK). There is no known history regarding its origins or what service it had done, but the following work was undertaken alone to bring it up to show standard. From the engine number, it was found that this Major was produced late 1946. It was almost complete but had various parts that would definitely need replacing. ... [Read Article]
