Additives are always a hot subject and I usually contribute my 2c.
I have a 4 cyl 1963 Ford 2000D, about 30 hp that has about 3600 orig. hours and no major wrenches on the engine. Having had it for about 10 years, it always had this horrible smoke out the tail pipe of which I couldn't tell if it was diesel or oil, or both. Rev it up and there was this blueish sorta of cloud behind it. It has a few leaks here and there so that could account for some of the engine oil loss.
"Anyhew", about 6 months ago I ran out of the usual diesel treatment I put in my fuel storage tanks and bought something different. In reading the label it was not only for storage but also for operating performance improvement.
I decided what the heck and gave the old girl a good slug of the stuff, about 5 times the normal amount and on the next tank I did it again.
I am totally amazed in the fact that the smoke is almost non existent. Apparently my injectors were clogged and probably the combustion chambers and rings were full of crud and all.
In short, they work for me. If you don't use them, it's your money and your machine.

In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo.
