got a h drives around fine in all gears other than it sound likes its grinding/ whine in 3rd a little and bad in 4th and 5th split unit and replaced all bearings on top shaft and input seals ( bearings had a lot of play) pinion gear ring gear looked fine but looks like they have been replaced before, looked to be like paint marks from a junk yard on them put it all back together seamed OK bottom shaft seamed tight and the little side shaft in the bottom seamed tight put it all back together and it still doing it when i had it apart thier were 3 shims in the pinion bearing holder and it didn't seam to have mutch play in the pinion do i have it to tight? could it be uneven were on pinion and ring gear? im kinda lost any help would be great!
