The oil base available today has different ingredients in it compared to the "good old days". As a result it seems to peel and just doesn't last like the old formulas did. If you use a primer latex doesn't peel. The last few year I have been using latex red stain by Cabot with good results. Location will also determine how long a paint job lasts. I have one building site that I painted all the buildings 17 years ago and it was painted with latex white. All the buildings lasted very good except one which was away from the trees and exposed to blowing snow blizzards and dust in windstorms. It lasted less then half the time so location plays a part on how long the paint lasts.
