Back in the late 70's, my mom bought a wax bar, with a rope on each end. It was basically a strip of plywood, with 2-4-D impregnated wax on each side. It was made to drag behind a riding lawnmower.
The main benefit, besides doing two jobs at once, is that there is no chance of drift into rose bushes, etc.
You could have tacked carpet on both sides, soaked the carpet down, and just drug it around.
