Haven't planted them for a few years here in eastern South Dakota... Had trouble with birds... and worms eating the seeds on the plant. We planted with a 7000 Deere using the corn meters at about 2 inches deep and a population of about 12 to 15k.... (we plant corn here at around 21 to 25K) We didnt plant till around end of May to first week of June... Ground has to be plenty warm... much warmer than for corn or beans... and crusting of the ground can cause problems... We did have to rotary hoe them a couple times to get them to come up after a heavy rain. Be careful at harvest time... Sunflowers are the worst crop to combine for fire danger...
