Legally you are OK without a DOT number if all you do is go to shows; you do not have any sponsors and you do not try to claim this tractor on your taxes. But that does not mean you will not be harassed by gung ho DOT cops. Look at the link S2710 gave you.
If you do other things with this truck and trailer then that may be a whole new can of worms. In state; out of state means nothing to you because Iowa requires intrastate trucks to have DOT #'s
