Down here we call it springing. She bags up and a week or so later starts springing. After that any time is the right time.
Had good luck this time. My heifers calved at night and had them all cleaned up by feeding time the next morning. No problems.
Cows didn't settle when expected possibly because of the heat that year. So calves came late and were born in August. Wasn't all that bad. But that 6 months gave the cows some growing time.
I'm a calve on second birthday guy and that has worked well for me normally. Usually use an angus or angus cross bull and herd is naturally polled.....yeah!
Over the years I have had few problems, one breech and one stillborn, one died about a week later for who knows reason, and one that got stepped on in the middle of left overs from a round bale. Not too bad. I keep the areas lit at night now and have had no more problems.
