I usually don"t have to start watering the lawn until late May, and then not much until after the 4th of July. Not this year. We are already 2" behind in moisture this year, and usually this is the wet season.
I have been working on putting in a new waterline between the pump house and the house. The 35 year old galvanized line apparently rusted out this winter and was leaking real bad--maybe 1000 gallons a day. We just let it leak, turning off the valve in the pump house at night, until it was warm enough for the frost to be out of the ground and the mud fairly dried out. I rigged a garden hose from the pump house to a hose bib on the house so I could unhook the old line. It is remarkable how much less rust we have in the water coming through the garden hose rather than coming through the old galvanized pipe. However the volume coming through the hose is a bit inadequate, as some of the piping it goes through in the house is only 1/2 inch copper, with several valves that restrict flow.
I finally got my friend with the backhoe to dig the ditch for the new line last Thursday. I am still doing some hand digging for the areas the backhoe could not reach safely. I am installing a new 1 inch 200lb poly line inside plastic conduit. There will be no fittings to leak, except at the ends of the poly line, and I hope I never need to mess with that line again.
Did I mention that I have ROCKS! Lots of rocks, from gravel size up to ones that probably weigh a couple of tons. I just plain could not have dug the ditch without a machine. It only took my buddy about 1.5 hours with his Cat backhoe. $300 very well spent! It makes me wonder how people did those jobs before they had machinery. With a shovel, pick, bar and a wheelbarrow, I doubt I could have dug the same ditch if I worked all Summer! And I sure don"t know how I would have removed those BIG rocks.
Anyhow in a couple of days, I should have everything hooked up, tested and operational again. Then I will be able to water the lawn again. Hope it starts raining again around here, it will be hard on the crops if we don"t get some soon.

Today's Featured Article - Listening to Your Tractor - by Curtis Von Fange. Years ago there was a TV show about a talking car. Unless you are from another planet, physically or otherwise, I don’t think our internal combustion buddies will talk and tell us their problems. But, on the other hand, there is a secret language that our mechanical companions readily do speak. It is an interesting form of communication that involves all the senses of the listener. In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo.
