I grew up in a house where both my parents drank coffee with chicory. The stronger the better so I really never acquired a taste for it.
If you really like some strong old fashion coffee you need to try some from New Orleans. The famous Cafe Du Monde serves coffee and chicory. It is traditionally served Au Lait (mixed half and half with hot milk) to tourist. That should give you a idea of how strong it is.
