: I recently bought a Ford 4000 tractor for $5200 (in SW Ohio) that is very clean, starts and runs great, and has a select-o-matic transmission which shifts well. I have heard that the select-o-matic is the weak part of this tractor. Is this true? If so, what can I do to extend it's life? : I plan to use the tractor to bush hog with a Bush Hog 206, run a small manure spreader, and some utility work. Hopefully with these light loads the drivetrain will last for many years (I hope! :-) : Also, the clutch is very grabby. Engages all at once at the very end of the pedal travel. Is there a fix or adjustment to help improve the clutch action? I can ride the brake to keep the tractor from jumping, but it should be more progressive, shouldn't it? : Thanks for your input! To extend the life of the select-o-speed transmission, change the oil and filter when recommended and have the bands adjusted by your New Holland servicing dealer. As for the clutch, there is no clutch attached to the pedal. What we have done to make the engagement smoother is bolt a short piece of 2x4 to the running board so your foot is higher and you will have more control of the pedal
