That sounds remarkably like what my dad, a strong Christian, said when they wanted to operate for prostate cancer when he was 84. He didn't want any part of it, but his 2nd wife and my sister insisted, so he got the operation.
He was still mobile before the operation- but the down-time, plus the effect of a long standing strained tendon, put him in a wheelchair after the operation. And of course, the operation itself made him incontinent, so he had to have a catheter and bag. He and wife were in assisted living, and if he could no longer toilet himself, they'd have had to move to a nursing home. They didn't want that, but between the two of them they could not get him onto the toilet in time, so he had to start wearing Depends.
Dad had always been a pretty happy guy- but he became very bitter after that. He was ready to "go home", but instead he ended up in a wheelchair wearing diapers.
Not saying what is right in your case, but I wish we had listened to Dad. . .
