I've got mixed feelings about the 4.3. I've heard that you either get a good one, or a bad one. The one in my 1996 Chevy Silverado didn't even quite make 100K before it developed problems. Ended up buying a rebuilt 4.3 from Advance Auto, and paid a professional garage to change it out. That rebuilt engine went 400 miles before it developed a serious knock and had to be pulled. The power is good for a V6, but the gas mileage isn't very good.
My parents have got an older 1998 GMC Envoy, and that one is still going with over 220K miles on it. They just had to replace the intake manifold gasket, but other than that, it's been relatively trouble free other than the usual items that wear out, such as the water pump and alternator.
