Its far down the list of firewood species here, but there sure was a lot of wood in those logs- I think that's what attracted the neighbor, the possibility of getting a couple of winter's worth without running all over creation to get it. I told him it would be hard to split, but he said he could do it. But I could also see him bucking it all up, then giving up on splitting it, and I'd be stuck with it. Pretty hard to get rid of a bunch of rounds that you can't lift!
He did tell me that the splitting maul just bounced off (I had had the same experience), but he was determined, so found a mondo splitter to borrow, and got the job done. Offered me part of the wood, but I opined that he'd worked hard enough on it that it should all be his (says the man with a shed full of alder and maple!).

There is no known history regarding its origins or what service it had done, but the following work was undertaken alone to bring it up to show standard.
