The adjoining land owner is actually responsible for "trimming" the ditches before October 1st each year. If you don't trim your ditch the county comes along and trims it for you and charges you $100 per mile. Most crop farmers around here don't want to mess around with it so they love that us livestock guys will cut it for them. There are a few land owners that have gotten greedy and started charging for the hay, but nobody will pay for it. The ditch doesn't get cut, land owner gets a bill from the county in the fall and next spring they are on the phone begging for someone to cut it.
