If the book doesn"t contain a reference to Laverne Pentland. It missed a cornerstone of several WWII projects. Laverne was raised on a farm near Dungannon Ontario. He was the general Foreman in a Detroit Michigan machine shop. Laverne setup the Allison aircraft production line and horrified the British Rolls Royce engineers. Until that time each engine was custom built and individually hand fitted. The Allison production line used " unskilled" labour to produce all components to such close specs that any component would interchange from any engine. Laverne bid on and ran the project for the first 13 atomic Little Boy bombs. They wondered what Manhattan Project on the blueprints was all about. They machined all 13 gun barrel and plug assemblies. Later on Lavern also bid and won contracts for the Mercury rocket program. In particular the support rings that held and aligned the rocket stages together. One set of rings got ruined and the truck driver went AWOL when the hillbilly took a back road on the way from Detroit to Florida . The Hillbilly was going to show off the important load to friends and family he was hauling but bent the rings . He took off scared and was never seen or heard of again.
