I grew up in the Mennonite church. There are many sects, but the ones you are thinking of are the most extreme. We didn't have all that many differences from other folks except drinking. My mom grew up more radical - no pants on women, no playing cards, no drinking, no dancing. Her mom was more sympathetic. My mom stopped at the grain bin on the way to school and changed into pants. She still holds the girls high jump record for that school and she did it in a skirt. She was afraid her dad would show up.
There were folks nearby that were very extreme - the Holderman mennonites. They would only drive a blue car with no radio or white walls (that's when they were the thing to do). They had all of the other restrictions as well.
In our area I have never known Mennonites with tax exemptions. That was only the Amish. We were all Russian Mennonites, maybe that's where the difference is.
