I think that you need to take into account the whole finance picture. I used to pride myself in getting into the Ag fairs without paying when we had livestock there on display, but now I feel more of a need to help them keep going. Ag fairs are extremely dependent on good weather, and just as they can be highly profitable in good weather years, they can loose a lot in rainy years because most of their costs are the same weather people come or not. Your clubs show may have had some high expenses and many more guys than needed coming to help. Or there may have been a problem with guys signing up to work shifts and instead getting in free, then just hanging out talking and not doing obligatory work. If you ask you may find out a bout a situation that you are unfamiliar with.
