As mentioned by Paul, huge flap over some RR wheat discovered in a field in eastern Oregon. Monsanto came up with RR wheat about a decade ago, but when Japan and Korea got wind of it, they said if we ever sent them any genetically modified wheat, they would never buy from us again. Since about 90% of the soft white grown around here goes to the far east, everybody lost interest in the project pretty quickly.
Present brouhaha came about when somebody sprayed the volunteer wheat in summer fallow and it wouldn't die. Farmer involved should have done the agronomy version of SSS, and just tilled it out- but called the Extension Agent instead. So now there's a big investigation, Japan has suspended shipments, heads will roll, etc., etc.
Probably was seed taken from the wrong bin, a long time ago- nobody knew, because no one had sprayed their wheat crop with Roundup. And most summer fallow just gets tilled rather than sprayed.
