OK 2 stories. 1) Bought a Oliver 1655 from a well known dealer in Pennslyvnia (sp) sight unseen because I wanted a 1655 and the dealer had a good rep. Man told me they had been running it around the yard and it was working fine. After it came I drove up my lane to see how it was running about 100 feet when it started knocking so I put in the building. Wouldn't restart. Pulled it down and 1 piston had replaced with some sanding and the pan was caved in to the bottom of the crank throw. Local mechanic told me that a repair like that would last about 20 minutes. I put in a long block and it is running fine. Had I looked at it might have started knocking on the dealer's yard. 2) Bought an Oliver 2255 off the photo ads here again sight unseen but had photos. It's been a very good tractor. Only thing i didn't see was the notch in the frame to remove the starter. Bothered but again the local mechanic assured me that wasn't all that uncommon and would not hurt the tractor strength. Recently, several years later, I had some work done and discover the slow brakes were caused by a leaking pump under the radiator--I would never have known that had I looked at it. So 2 stories with slightly different results and I am still not put off on buying sight unseen. Just have to take as much precautions as possible and trust the seller to be honest.
