We filled silos using the same method until 1949 or 1950 when a local farmer bought a chopper and did custom silo filling. My brother and I were still in high school and we both played sports. My dad hired this man with his chopper and Farmall M. It took us several weeks to fill the old way. He also had 2 dump trucks to haul the silage and we kept 2 men tramping the silage. We filled both big silos in 3 days
The farm manager kept the belt tractor fueled and oil level checked. WE had a 10-20 on the belt until we bought an H in 1950 and used that on the belt. In 1951 my brother joined the Air Force and in 1953 I was drafted into the Army. My dad was getting up in age and sold the farm in 1954.
