You are so right John B. Last year I was returning to the farm after raking hay. Two cars behind me with a hill ahead. I signaled with my left hand that I was going to make a left hand turn (arm straight out). The idiot behind me thought I was signaling him he could go around me and passed just as I started my turn. Luckily I saw him out the corner of my eye and jerked back and stopped. Of course, as he passed he looked at me as though I was crazy. The second car, which was behind him, (an elderly man)stopped. When I looked back at him, he was just shaking his head. He knew what the signal meant but the idiot who passed didn't. I guess if I had hit him he would have learned what hand signals mean, since there was a witness. When us old-timers started driving, most cars didn't have turn signals so turns or stops were signaled with your left hand. As John said, just be careful and expect the unexpected.
