A Shaver post pounder works great. Several tips: 1) Do not sharpen your post to a point. You will not get the angles equal on each side and the post will shoot off on one direction or another. Also if you hit a root or rock they will go crooked. Leave about 3-4 inches of the end flat. The post will drive much straighter.
2) On large corner post I have a 4 inch hand twist digger. I dig down 3 foot or so with it. Keep it good and sharp and it does not take long to twist a hole that small that deep. Then drive you corner post in that small hole. Kind of like pre-drilling a screw hole in wood. The larger post will drive easier and it will follow the small hole and go straight. Shaver makes a hydraulic auger attachment that swings right around the driver to drill a pilot hole. I would like to have one.
3) The best time to drive posts is when the ground is soft. Lots of the time in early spring I will drive posts when the tractor is just about spinning with the ground so soft. The post will drive much easier and they will be tighter than a post driven into dry hard ground.
