Do you notice it smoking when it's idling? Mine was was doing what you describe and would smoke at an idle, especially at start. Would cut out more at highwaythe speeds. The exaust would burn your eyes. It ended up being the lift pump/injection pump. I'm sure you've heard this before, but always monitor the fuel pressure in these 24 valves with a dummy light or gauge, it could save you thousands. Lift pumps are cheap, injection pumps not so much.
