I suggest you google any mower before you buy it. I have a 97 JD gt275 48 inch and a 30 inch tiller, a 17 hp kawasaki. Great mower. My son had a JD push mower with a 6.5 briggs. After his threw a rod, he googled it and found out that engine is junk, rod problems. Some think it was made in china.
So asking what to stay away from really doesn't mean a lot. I would tell you JD's are good, son would tell you to stay away from a JD.
Just because an old brand is good, doesn't really mean the new ones are worth anything.
Your question is asked often here. Check out the archives.
I was at rural king, and they were selling a 54 inch huskie varnie for $1250. It was a used return item. I have a 8 year old 48 inch huskie varnie and love it. However, I purchased it at Lowes for $1200 with 5 hours on it. The paper work showed it had a short and was blowing fuses. So ask the person who bougth my mower and they would tell you junk. I have about 400 hours on it and no problems.
Before you buy anything google it for the latest reviews.

No. I am just happy to have their friendship. At least the word "farmer" is in my title. But what is the attraction? How can I explain the sensation and exhilaration I feel when I turn the key and hear the engine come to life (most
