There are coatings you can put on a washed egg to help it keep. The old standby was good, clean lard. Various food grade oils (Crisco, Olive) will also work. Water Glass will reportedly allow them to keep for many months at room temp. There is a lady running an test on this at a homesteading site now.
We sell our extra eggs. We lightly wash and refrigerate them for appearance sake. If we remember to keep the nest boxes full of clean bedding the washing need is much smaller. I don't candle them, never did learn how to do that, but we collect twice a day anyway.
The "floating egg is bad" system is the same we used. When the kids were little and I was working full time is was always a real good idea to check them. Nothing like having a partially formed chick drop out of a "good" egg into a mixing bowl!
