My youngest son just got his learner's permit a couple of weeks ago. My wife was with him as he drove and luckily he looked in the rear view mirror one day as he was making a left turn. He saw a car coming a great speed behind him and then the car behind him goes into the left lane and passes him right before my son makes a left turn. Luckily, my son stopped right in the middle of the highway and just waits for the guy to go around. Had he made the left turn, the car would have probably clipped him in the driver's door, at a high speed. My wife was with my son and she also said that my son had his left turn signal on. It was his first example of defensive driving.
