If there are 4 brushes, wouldn't there also be 4 field windings? Every universal motor I've seen, the current that passes through one brush comes out the brush on the opposide of the armature. So that would mean 2 brushes connected to ground would be side by side and the other 2 brushes would also be side by side. Therefore, reversing the current would mean a 180 degree rotation of the end plant holding the brushes, Right?
Would ricb please post a pic of both starters with the ends removed? Use a sharpie and put marks on both starters so you get the end bells replaced in their original position.
I've always wondered how changing from a positive ground to a negative ground wouldn't change the direction of the starter.
Yes, winding the armature backward would make it go backward, so will changing the direction the field winding were wound as well as reversing the current through the brushes. All three will do the job.
To reverse the direction of a drill, the current throught the armature is reversed with a switch.
I don't see how this starter can't be reversed by doing the same thing. George
