Modern weed sprays did away with the need for cultivating crossways. When Dad was still alive, they had sprays for broadleaf weeds, but nothing that would kill grasses & not corn (corn is a grass). Next was power drop. Drop 3 or 4 kernels at same spacing as checking, but controlled by wheel rotation instead of wire. Same plant population per acre, but less labor for planting. Then came drilling. Instead of 4 plants in a hill at 40 inches, drop single seeds at 10 inches. Still the same population. Then came narrower rows & closer spacing for higher populations. WJ
