Something you could look at before giving up on the Ford is the gear ratio. In that era the mfgrs. and dealers were installing some pretty tall gears, like even 3:08's, even 3:55's aren't near low enough for a small v-8 ( of any brand - not picking on just Ford here ). 4:10's or even lower would be better. I do my towing with an "07 chev. 2500, 6L, 5sp manual, 4:10 gears, with any kind of real load I've got to drop to 4th on most hills, 3rd if I've got to pull a long 6% grade.
