Yea some deuce and a half's were a multi fuel engine models. They did run well on anything except diesel but they would run.
2 1/2 ton off road, 5 ton on road was the official load cap. I don't know of any active units that had them past the early 90s. When they started the peace dividend draw downs they got rid of the 2 1/2 tons and issued 5 tons in their place. The "new" 5 ton was a Cummins with an Allison tranny. Basically they took the 5 tons from the units closing down and reissued them to the units staying. They cut the Army from 800,000 to 400,000. They had more 5 tons than they needed and the 2 1/2 fleet was getting pretty old. Army only ran those things about 25,000 miles between total rebuild. Tracked vehicles like tanks and APC's got rebuild at 5k miles.
