I had the same problem when I was doing small squares. I would actually make good sized, tight bales. Had a hard time with people telling me I wanted too much when I was 50 cents more a bale than the other guy who"s bales weighed half what mine did.
Got better when I went to rounds, now I sell by the ton. If a customer wants to buy by the bale, I base it off the per ton price. If they think I"m off on the weight of the bales, I have a scale 2 miles down the road and will gladly weigh them.
There used to be better money in small squares. I don"t think that is so true any more. A lot of grass hay/mix hay squares around here are being advertised for $4-$5 a bale. If they truly are 40-50lb bales, that"s around $80-$120 per ton. The worst rounds I have right now will bring $120 per ton.
