Back in 1959 when I was 12 years old, after school I would ride my bicycle over to Gene Autry's office in Toluca Lake (Calif.) and talk with Gene for hours. I did this on a fairly regular basis. Well, one time I was so engrossed in listening to Gene tell some of his war stories that I forgot to pay attention to the time. My mother served dinner at 6 PM and when I noticed the time it was nearly 7:30 PM . Gene said he'd put my bike in the trunk of his car and he'd take me home and smooth things over with my folks. When we got to my home, Gene parked his car - a big white Cadillac with a pair of Brahma bull horns on the front of the hood - directly in front of the house and hit his horn which sounded like a huge steer mooing. My mom opened the door, looked out and saw the car and called my father to come out. As my parents came down the front walkway, Gene & I got out of the car and Gene took my bike out of the trunk. My father, a corporate insurance broker, already knew Gene quite well as he was Gene's insurance broker, but it surprised my parents to find out that I knew Gene on a personal level. Gene and my parents talked for a few minutes, we thanked Gene for bringing me home, and he left. I never did get scolded for missing dinner that night.
Gene Autry was only one of the many movie stars & celebrities that I knew. We used to have Roy Rogers and Dale Evans over to the house quite a few times, John Wayne has been to our house a few times, Preston Foster, Lloyd Bridges (Sea Hunt), and many many others. I grew up with most of the kids on the original Mickey Mouse Club show. Before they became famous, I was over at the Nelson family's house quite often and knew Ozzie, Harriet, Dave, & Rick. In fact Dave, Rick, & I used to pal around a lot together. I've even been in a movie with Dave & Harriet - "Smash-Up On Interstate 5" (Filmways Productions 1976), I've been in a lot of other movies as an "Extra", also 7 episodes of "Manix", 3 episodes of "Emergency", and as one of the technical advisors for the movie "Mother, Juggs, and Speed".
All of these "movie stars" are just ordinary, down-to-earth people, it's just that their job puts them in front of a camera.
