I understand the deal with the heat and a ship not being able to get close enough. What I was meaning when I said 'tanker' was one of the planes designed to dtop water from overhead. As fast as they fly the heat wouldn't be that much of an issue for them. Too, with some of the water loads the larger planes can carry, dumping it from overhead like they do, and along with flame retardant, it doesn't seem like it would take them long to extinguish a fixed flame like that.
Heck, the way they start designing things when something like this happens, why not design a Halon 'bomb'? Being in the Navy I had the opportunity to see how well Halon worked when the system was set off "accidentally" in one space and nearly put out the fires in the boilers in the next space. A cloud of that stuff around that rig and the fire doesn't stand a chance.
