Went to wife's class reunion a couple weeks ago. Held at one classmate's large, fancy house near Puget Sound. With forest all around.
One of the women brought 54 of the Chinese lanterns- one for each of the 54 classmates of the Class of '66 who has died. Everybody was supposed to take one with the name of someone they knew, and say some words as they lit and released the lantern. Wife took the one for her cousin's best friend, who was killed in Vietnam.
Nice idea but I gotta say, I was fearing the worst when those flaming things went off across the woods, and out of sight. The idea, of course, is that its the fire that's keeping them aloft, and they won't come down until the fire goes out. And I guess it worked- didn't set the woods on fire, at least this time. . .
