It would have been kind of hard to look on Ebay. There was no Ebay then. LOL. The WWW has really helped the parts issue on the not so common tractors and equipment. You can find stuff thousands of miles away in a short time.
Also I think it took time for there to be a secondary parts supply for the Longs. They where a bear to get parts for awhile. I am glad there is some place to get them from now.
As far as JD and the parts cost. I am not getting in the "value" argument with you tonight. Here is a FACT: what company is still in business and what one is not???? So if I just have one tractor that I am not depending on for my livelihood than I might buy a Long. But I would not own it if I had to depend on it to make my living with.
I am not knocking the Long tractor it is just a fact about the company. There are others that have had the same thing happen to them. Might not have been a bad tractor but no dealers and hard to get parts for. So they are not an option in my operation. I am glad that they find a place with other guys.
